Journalist. He was the leading American drama critic of his time. Active from 1905 to 1958, he published 34 books on the theater, co-edited "The Smart Set" and "The American Mercury" magazines. He helped establish the New York Drama Critics Circle and was its President from 1937 to 1939. He was also the author of "The Theatre Book of the Year" from 1943 to 1951.
