BIRTH; 9 MAR 1840 Elkhart IN
DEATH; 6 MAY 1921 Luther Oklahoma OK.

MUSTER IN; 28 OCT 1862 Indianapolis Marion IN.
DESERTED: 19 JAN 1863 Arkansas Post Desha AR While foraging for food
ARRESTED: 24 FEB 1864, Fountain IN. Sent to Indianapolis, IN.

MUSTER OUT; 8 DEC 1863, New Orleans, Orleans, LA
Term of service expired; mustered out as a deserter.
Amount for clothing in kind or money advanced, $22.46,
Reward for Arrest, $30.00

NOTES: Deserted in the vicinity of Arkansas Post, AR on January 19th, 1863; although he stated at his courts-martial that he was captured while foraging for food, there are no records of his confinement, or parole. He was arrested February 25th, 1864 and returned to Indianapolis, IN for disposition; while awaiting the results of the court proceedings, he escaped the Guard House. Although found guilty in absentia, no sentence was passed; most likely because his regiment was already mustered out.

"Respectfully returned to the Commanding Officer District of Indiana. The recommendation of Major Burnett, Judge Advocate Northern Department is approved and the accused will be forwarded as provided for if he should be arrested."
"The evidence in this is irregular, but the prisoner [is] not attempting to clear himself from the charge. The finding [declaring Private Alward a deserter] is approved."
