Joseph Vita Caraccia, 77, passed away at home in Forest, VA on Sunday, August 26, 2012. He was born on February 28, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, son of the late Joseph Caraccia and Vitina Bianco Caraccia. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Marco and Francis and his sister Josephine. Joe was honorably discharged from reserve duty in the Army National Guard and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant after six years of service. Joe then worked for thirteen years in the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a member of the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers. He was retired from the Department of Sanitation of the City of New York after 23 years of service and as manager of Salzman Chemists, a local pharmacy in Queens, NY after 25 years of dedicated service. He was a regular communicant of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church.
Joe is survived by Mary Frances Correa Caraccia, his wife of 54 years, their children, Joseph Jr. and his wife Dolores, Vitina and her husband Lt. Col. John Ptakowski, USMC, Ret. and Stephen. He has seven grandchildren Jonathan, Michelle and Joseph O. Caraccia and Maria, Laura, Theresa, and Lisa Ptakowski.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm on Wednesday, August 29 and Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.
A celebration of Joseph's life will be conducted at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, Bedford, VA on Friday, August 31, 2012 at 11:30 am.
