Gale Allyn "John" Love was born May 8, 1943, in Ellisville, Miss. He died Feb. 4, 2013, after a brief illness. He leaves his best friend, soul mate and love of his life for more than 50 years, Dr. Jean Dawson Love; and his dearly beloved pets, Lizzie, Charlie, Zekey, Jake and Anna.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Allyn and Anna Lois Williamson Love. He is survived by a sister, Arlene Love Sutton (Raymon), Flat Rock Community; brothers, Dwight Love (Sue), Crooked Oak Community, and Joe Love (Diane), Town Creek, Ala.; and several nieces; and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his dearly loved mother-in-law, Elizabeth Cole Dawson; and brothers-in-law, Kennith Dawson and Paul Dawson, Town Creek, Ala. He is also survived by his extended family of sisters-in-law, Joyce Dawson Mitchell (Billy), Tuscumbia, Ala, Virginia Dawson McMillan (Frankie) and Peggy E. Dawson, of Town Creek, Ala.; and brothers-in-law, Charles "Bill" Dawson (Ruth) and Clyde Dawson (Audrey), of Town Creek, Ala.
John graduated from Mount Hope High School and attended the University of North Alabama. He was a master mason and a member of the Sheffield Masonic Lodge 304. He was a member of the Cahaba Shriners, Huntsville, Ala., and the Muscle Shoals Shrine Club. He was a lifetime member of the American Disabled Veterans. An Elk for several years, John received numerous certificates of appreciation for his contributions. A great source of pride for John was his involvement in creating Shoals Elk Lodge 2860 in Sheffield, Ala. where he was the first charter member. He served as an officer in numerous capacities as well as publishing the Lodge newsletter.
John served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, and, due to his high intellect, he was stationed at the White House with the White House Communications Agency where he was attached to the Secret Service Detail. He held numerous security clearances, including a top secret security clearance with a "K" classification. His service to Presidents Johnson and Nixon included extensive world-wide travel as special courier for the presidents. He received the Presidential Service Certificate and a letter of commendation for his service. He also received a certificate of appreciation for his assistance with the Apollo 12 crew's tour on behalf of the President of the United States.
John spent many years in sales and was extremely proud of his work with competency based educational software, including sales across the U.S. and Canada in public and private schools, colleges and correctional institutions.
He was bright and creative and was a huge asset to those around him. He was greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Love Scholarship Fund, Shoals Elk Lodge 2860, P. O. Box 2327, Muscle Shoals, AL 35662.
Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 7, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Lawrence Funeral Home, Hwy 157, Moulton, Ala., with funeral services to follow in the chapel. Interment will be at King Cemetery, Hwy 236 in the Wolf Springs Community, following the funeral.
