Dorothy A. Hughey Resident of Concord Passed away July 28, 2012. She was born Dorothy Ann Ginochio Oct. 22, 1922 in Ukiah, Ca., the only child of George and Bessie Cox Ginochio. Her paternal grandmother was Susan Burke who was from an early Ukiah family. Her maternal grandparents were Joseph and Eliza Cox, early Ukiah ranchers. Dorothy loved spending time with her grandparents at the ranchit always held a very special place in her heart. She graduated from Ukiah High in 1940, then graduated from UC Berkeley in 1944 with a degree in Liberal Arts. She married Paul Hughey in June 1944 in Kingsville, Texas where he was stationed with the US Navy. Following his discharge from the Navy they moved to Berkeley where Paul attended UC Berkeley on the GI Bill and Dorothy worked in the business office of Pacific Telephone. Following the births of their two daughters in 1952 and 1954, they lived briefly in Walnut Creek, then moved to Louisiana for 3.5 years where Paul worked for Kaiser Aluminum. They returned to Berkeley in 1960 where Dorothy was active in PTA, Girl Scouts and the First Baptist Church. They moved to Martinez in 1964. Mrs. Hughey moved to Concord in 1990. Dorothy's great passion was knitting which she learned to do as a little girl from her grandmother Cox. She made dozens of beautiful garments and at one time was employed by a professional designer. She was also an accomplished seamstress sewing many beautiful dresses for her two daughters. She loved the ocean, spending many summers at Aptos, Ca., vacationing with her family. She liked baseball and tennis, grew African violets, and enjoyed reading cookbooks. She never met a stranger, inheriting her father's extroverted personality. In the 1980's she became involved with a very special group of women through the TERRAP program in Lafayette. They formed a tight bond, becoming lifelong friends, whose friendships she treasured. She is survived by her daughter, Diana Blackman and husband Scott, daughter Susan Miller and husband Tom, grandson Daniel Blackman and wife Katie, grandsons Ryan and Andrew Blackman, granddaughter Sarah Clancy and husband Pat, granddaughter Amanda Miller, her two cousins Gilman and Gerald Cox of Ukiah. The family would like to express sincere thanks to her longtime friend, Kay King, for her love, support and friendship through the years, especially during the last month. There will be a private burial in the Ukiah Cemetery.
