JOHNSONS DIE IN ACCIDENT
News has been received of the death of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Johnson of Modesto, Calif., formerly of Emporia. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were fatally injured in an automobile collision in Modesto.
Funeral services for Mr. Johnson will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Franklin-Downs Funeral Home in Modesto and burial will be in the National Cemetery in Los Angeles, Calif. Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Roberts-Blue-Barnett Chapel in Emporia. They will be conducted by Rev. Robert T. Moore, pastor of the Free Methodist Church. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson, who was born Sept. 4th, 1894, in Emporia, was the son of John A. and Rosa DeSpain Johnson. He was married in 1918, in Evansville, Ind., to his first wife, Lydia M. Strupp, who died Nov. 17th, 1957, and he was married on May 1st, 1969, in Neosho Rapids, to Inez Blackburn Johnson, who was killed in the accident. Mr. Johnson was a veteran of World War I. He was preceded in death by two sons, Clair and Harry E. Jr.; three brothers, Orville, Emery and Clifford; and two sisters, Mabel Castro and Rose Johnson. He is survived by two sons, Lloyd E., of 605 Lantern Lane, and Marion, of Rt. 4; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Connie) Hendrix, of Modesto; and eight grandchildren.
Mrs. Johnson, whose parents were John W. and Mary Ellen Gray Blackburn, was born June 15th, 1897, in Orlando, Neb., and she was married on June 27th, 1916, in Cottonwood Falls, to her first husband, Orville S. Johnson, who died Oct. 11th, 1964. Mrs. Johnson, whose home for many years was at 514 South Market St., was preceded in death by her first husband and one brother, Thomas Blackburn. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. B. D. (Juanita) Weir, Valley Station, Ky.; two sisters, Mrs. D. M. (Bertha) Bowen, Sacramento, Calif., and Mrs. Alex (Fern) Arnold, Hartford; one granddaughter, Mrs. Earl W. (Linda Kay) Kessler, Valley Station; and three great-grandchildren, Buddy, Bobbie and Lynetta Kessler, of Valley Station.
