Mary's maiden name is unknown. She was the wife of Simeon Peter Schmidt/Smith.
Mary's tombstone is here in this cemetery, but her grave is in the small family graveyard located near the bluff, located 1/3rd of a mile north of this cemetery. Her tombstone was moved from the small family graveyard in the 1970's and placed in this cemetery but her body is not located here. See "Smith-Old Smith Family Cemetery" listing on Find A Grave for more information.

This tombstone reads:
Mary Smith, Mother of Simon Smith, died 16 October 1845, age 68
(Her footstone (found in 2021) which is still located near her actual grave up under the bluff reads: OLD MOTHER SMITH, Died 10.16.45, age 68.)

Perhaps the best source that is available that verifies the date of Mary's death is the following letter which was written by George and Margaret Wood on 17 December 1845. George and Margaret Wood lived in Bowen Township and Joy Russell has copies of several letters written by them to family members in Tennessee. One of the letters read:
" Arkansas, Madison County, December the 17, 1845: Dear Father and Mother and Friends: I take this opportunity to let you know that I have landed home. I got home the first day of this month and found my family all in good health, hoping this may find you enjoying the same. I have not seen a well day since I left there, tho I had but one shake and one chill on my journey home, but have had bad fevers. This has been powerful bad fall here for sickness. The settlements round me has all been sick and a good number have left this world, and the most stoutest persons lay the shortest time. I appears like the health of this country gets worse instead of better. You would not know who they was that deceased, but Sparkman knows some of them. Nickles Bowen's wife (Hilde), Daughterty's wife, old mother Bolinger and old mother Smith, and old William Robinson's wife, and Weldon Callon and members of others. Though I think I am on the rise but slow, though Dotsons teases the people hear that the people in Tennessee dies so fast that the workmen is kept busy making coffins, but I don't believe that, nor the bear tale neither. Sonomore but remains yours Son and Daughter until death, George and Margaret, to George and Elizabeth"

This old mother Smith no doubt refers to Mary Smith's death, since Mary died 16 October 1845.
