The people of this city were given a severe shock late Thursday afternoon when
it was learned that Mrs. Jessie Lamport had died at the Watseka hospital. Her
death was due to severe burns which she received some weeks ago. She was
cleaning house and in some way knocked a bottle of inflammable fluid onto a hot
stove. The explosion set fire to her clothing, and before help arrived she was
severely burned. While it was known that the burns were serious, it was not
expected that they would prove fatal. Soon after the accident she was taken to
the hospital at Watseka by her daughter, Mrs. August Hanson, and late reports
were to the effect that she was improving. A number of her Momence friends had
visited her at the hospital and all were of the opinion that she would recover
and the news of her death came as a surprise and shock to all.
Mrs. Lamport was one of Momence’s best known and highly esteemed women. She
spent the greater part of her life in this vicinity, where she had a wide circle
of friends.
She was about 67 years of age, her maiden name being Jessie Alexander. On
December 19, 1877, she was married to Mr. Edward C. Lamport. They first
established their home on a farm near this city, where they lied until 1897,
when they moved to this city, where Mr. Lamport conducted a meat market for
about a year. He died in September 1898. She was active in church and other
circles of Momence for many hyears, and was always aligned with every movement
which had for its object the betterment of the community, and she will be sadly
missed in this community, where she spent so many active years.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. August Hanson of Watseka, Mrs. Georgia
Fleisch of Battle Creek, Mich. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Alma
Durham of Dawson, N.M., three grandchildren and other relatives.
The remains were brought to this city on Friday and the funeral held from the
Methodist church, of which she was a member, on Saturday afternoon, Rev. Truitt
officiating.
