She was the widow of the late John Burgwin Green, Jr. Married on November 22, 1953, they enjoyed more than fifty years together before his death in 2004.
Mrs. Green was born Helen Grace Gaskins in the Asbury community of Craven County on September 11, 1928, the daughter of the late Tracy Leland Gaskins, Sr. and Susan Beatrice Davis, his wife.
Educated in the Craven County schools, she graduated from Jasper High School in 1945. She then attended East Carolina Teachers College, now East Carolina University, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1949. She was certified to teach Science and Home Economics and began her teaching career as a Home Economics teacher at Chocowinity High School in Beaufort County. She then returned to New Bern where she taught Home Economics at New Bern High School and J.T. Barber Junior High School for more than twenty-five years.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Green was preceded in death by her brothers Tracy Leland Gaskins, Jr. and Harvey Wadsworth Gaskins Sr. and her sister Gladys Gaskins Farnell.
She is survived by her sons John Burgwin Green, III, and wife Jane; and William Davis Green, and wife Lisa; and by her grandson Thomas Samuel Green, son of William and Lisa Green. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors at Pollock-Best Funeral Home Monday, February 4, from 6 to 8 pm. The funeral service will be at 2:30 pm Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Centenary United Methodist Church, New Bern, N.C.
Burial will follow immediately after at Cedar Grove Cemetery, New Bern, N.C.
