Born in Winchester, Manitoba, to rancher James McGowan and Dinana Priscilla Guernsey.

Jim was born as his parents were in the process of moving West with their first three children from Mountain, Dundas, Ontario.

They appear to have lived in Souris, Manitoba for about a decade before settling in Lonesome Butte, Saskatchewan.

His parents, Dinana and James, were said to have had a fine library and willingly lent books to others in the area.

Jim spent most of his career ranching at Rock Creek. His second wife, Mable Rodd Slynn, was a school teacher with many of the neighbouring children as her pupils.

According to a former neighbor, the ranch that Jim built up over the years has now been sold to Parks Canada and is part of the developing Grasslands National Park along the Canada/US border, between Killdeer and Val Marie.
