Hastings resident Eugene Way "Gene" Burchess, 83, of 727 N. Lexington Ave. died Saturday Oct 11, 2003, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Service are 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral in Hastings with the Very Rev. Richard J. Martindale officiating. Burial will be at St. Mark's Pro-Cathedral Columbarium. The remains were cremated. Book signing is until 9 p.m. today at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.

Mr. Burchess was born April 11. 1920. to Bert and Hedwig (Way) Burchess in Hastings. He was a telephone lineman for Lincoln Telephone until 1940. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he attended flight school. He married Carmen Van Sickle in Waco, Texas, on March 27. 1943. After his discharge, he returned to work for the telephone company. He served in the Korean War in 1951 and was later stationed at Stead Air Force Base in Reno, Nev. He returned to Hastings in 1953 and was a pilot for J.M. McDonald Co. until 1970. He was a real estate and construction manager for J.M. McDonald before retiring in 1983.

He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Catherdral and a junior warden and senior warden of St. Mark's Vestry. He also was a founding member of Ducks Unlimited in Hastings and a member of Mid-West Lodge No. 317 Scottish Rite, Tehama Shrine, Elks, American Legion, Hastings Skylarks Club, and Southern Hills Country Club.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Jon of Lincoln; three daughters, Sherri Middleton and Kris Theis, both of Hastings, and Shellie Hunter of Aurora, Colo.; one sister, Bette White of Lincoln, 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral, Mary Lanning School of Nursing Scholarship Fund or Ducks Unlimited.
