Virginia Dare Hemphill Romey, 73, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. Visitations will be Thursday, May 29th from 1-3 PM and 5-7 PM and Friday, May 30th from 1-3 PM and 5-7 PM and Saturday from 10 am until the 11 am funeral service at Chancellor Funeral Home in Florence. Burial will follow at Florence Cemetery.

Mrs. Romey was born in Attala County on September 19, 1940 to the late Alton and Lorraine Nowell Ballard. She has lived in Florence for over 40 years, moving from Jackson. Mrs. Romey enjoyed ceramics, hunting, fishing, and cooking. She coached several softball teams for young girls when she first moved to Florence and she donated the land for Hemphill Park in memory of her first husband, William G. Hemphill, Jr.

Mrs. Romey was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; her infant son, Greg Hemphill; and her brother, Buck Ballard. She is survived by her husband of 25 years Mickey Romey of Florence; daughters, Lissa Hemphill of Florence and Teresa Hemphill of Richland; brother, Tony Ballard of Kosciusko; sister-in-law, Bea Hemphill Sarrett of Pearl grandchildren, Chazmin Hemphill Sturgill and William Hemphill; and 3 great grandchildren, Lacy, Braden, and Kiba.
