Courtenay 'Coco' Winfield McAlpin, Sr. entered the gates of eternal life on April 1, 2004. Born in Oxnard, California, on August 17, 1923, he grew up in New York and San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Roderick McAlpin and Grace Norcross McAlpin Bell. A graduate of Texas Military Academy, he attended Texas A&M College before joining the U.S. Marines. Subsequent to Pearl Harbor, with the 1st Marines, he made landings on several South Pacific Islands, receiving the Purple Heart and medals for action on the island of Guam. He attended the University of Texas and married Patricia Peyton in 1952. Their two children are Courtenay Winfield McAlpin, Jr., and Kathleen Grace McAlpin Sandness and her husband, Wesley James Sandness. Grandsons are Todd Sandness, Jeff Sandness and great granddaughter Lauren Sandness. His brother, J.R. McAlpin, Jr. and Anne McAlpin McKinley Waters are both deceased. Brother-in-law is George Bailey Peyton, Jr. and wife, Nancy. He has numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. 'Coco' spent many years in sales for Texaco, New England Mutual Life Insurance, Steves and Sons, and Vaughan and Sons. He was a devoted worshiper at Christ Episcopal Church, serving as Senior Warden, choir member and men's prayer group participant. His many friends include San Antonians in several social organizations, and volunteers in local charitable organizations. MEMORIAL EUCHARIST SERVICE MONDAY APRIL 5, 2004 2:00 P.M. CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH A reception will follow in the parish hall.
