Born in Jamestown, NY, January 2, 1929, he was the son of the late Ralph A. Peterson and Mabel (Bates) Peterson.
He graduated from Falconer High School in 1946 and received a B.A. from Alfred University in 1950, an M.A. from the State University of New York at Albany in 1951, and an M.S. from the University of Oregon in 1966.
Over his 40 year career in education, he taught mathematics at Tompkins County Community College, and at high schools in Panama, NY, Groton, NY, and Cortland, NY, before retiring to York, where he taught at the Christian School.
Roger served in the United States Air Force, based at Nellis Air Force and was commissioned as First Lieutenant.
For 13 years he volunteered at York Hospital making pharmacy deliveries to the floors. Roger worshiped at Pilgrim Presbyterian Church.
Roger is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothea (Harding) Peterson of Martinsburg, WV; brother, Gordon Peterson of Jamestown, NY; five children, The Reverend Roger Peterson, Jr. and wife, Abbie of Ridgeway, PA, Shelley Peterson of York, Bradley Peterson of Hedgesville, WV, Kathryn Moore and husband, David of Hedgesville, and Richard Peterson and wife, Sonja of Depew, NY; 13 grandchildren, Donna, Jim, Dwan, Lisa, Christopher, Sean, Jennifer, Joel, Stephanie, Jovonne, Jasmyn, Shawn, and Michele; and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., February 2, 2013, at Pilgrim Presbyterian Church, Martinsburg, WV, with the Rev. Jerry Mead officiating. Interment will follow in Rosedale Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Martinsburg, WV.
