Evelyn Albus Backus, 87, of Wheeler died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013.

Rosary and vigil will be at 7 p.m. today in Holy Family Catholic Church in Nazareth. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in the church with the Rev. Ken Keller as celebrant. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in St. Philip's Neri Cemetery in Pep with the Rev. Bob Birkenfeld, deacon, officiating. Arrangements are by Peppers Family Funeral Home of Wheeler.

Evelyn Albus Backus was born Oct. 7, 1925, in Fayette County to John and Pauline Langhamer. Evelyn attended public school in Middle Creek, near Schulenburg.

Evelyn married Wilbert F. Albus in 1949 in High Hill. Evelyn and Wilbert had five children. Wilbert preceded her in death in 1964.

Evelyn was a loving mother, raising her five children in Pep, teaching them work ethics, moral values, and Christian faith and leading them by example. Evelyn worked at Pep and Whiteface schools, retiring after more than 20 years. As a woman of deep faith, Evelyn attended Mass and prayed the rosary daily for many years. Her hobbies included quilting, bingo, cooking and polka music. She won multiple blue ribbons for her famous homemade peanut brittle, cinnamon rolls and bread.

In 1984, Evelyn married Earl G. Backus. At this time, she moved from Pep to Nazareth. Evelyn was involved in Holy Family Catholic Church and Nazareth Senior Citizens Center. Earl preceded her in death in 1991. Evelyn was loved and will be missed by many nephews, nieces and close friends. Rest in peace, Meemaw.

She also was preceded in death by three children, Mike Albus in 2010, Ann Albus Arnold in 1986, and Terry R. Albus in 1981; and a brother, Norman Langhamer, in 1986.

Survivors include a son, Gary Albus and wife Penny of San Antonio; a daughter, Gail Sams and husband Dan of Wheeler; a daughter-in-law, Camille Albus of New Braunfels; six grandchildren, Dustin Albus and fiancé Theresa Woodward of Kyle, Ashley Albus Ferguson and husband Jared of New Braunfels, Andrea Albus of Las Cruces, N.M., and fiancé Steve Rodriguez of Hobbs N.M., Trey Albus and wife Andrea of Lubbock, Lauren Sams Kelly and husband Paul of McKinney, and Landon Sams and fiancée Melissa McKinley of Pinetop, Ariz.; two great-grandchildren, Presleigh Elizabeth Ferguson of New Braunfels and Madison Miranda Albus of Lubbock; her twin brother, Alvin Langhamer and wife Lynette of Schulenburg; a brother, Leon Langhamer and wife Marcella of Schulenburg; and a sister, Elizabeth Kotrola of Kirby.

The family would like to thank the dedicated and caring staff at Wheeler Nursing and Rehab Center and Parkview Hospital for helping Evelyn maintain her dignity during the last two years.

The family suggests memorials be to Nazareth Senior Citizens, P.O. Box 241, Nazareth, TX 79063.
