John Hurlon Cockrell, 86, passed away on February 27, 2009 in Lubbock. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 2, 2009 at the Floyd County Memorial Park in Floydada with Brother Ronnie Hedges officiating. Services are under the direction of Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Floydada.

John Cockrell was born on October 18, 1922 in Richland Springs to John Wesley Cockrell and Aura (Prescott) Cockrell. He served his country as a member of the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. John married Geneva Connelley on December 18, 1943 in West Palm Beach, Fla. To this union the Cockrell's were blessed with two children, Janice and Ken. John continued to serve his country and his community for many years as a United States Postal Carrier. He was a member of the New Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Floydada.

Before joining the US Postal Service, John worked for a number of years for Parker Furniture in Floydada. John had served as Past Post Commander of the Floydada VFW, had served as Past President of the Floydada Senior Citizens Center and was active in the Whirlwind's Good Sam's Club. While John's children were growing up he coached Little League baseball, was active in local scouting groups, and was a proud member of the Floydada Band Boosters. Throughout his lifetime he was an avid stamp collector.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 65 years, Geneva Cockrell of Lubbock, formerly of Floydada; daughter, Janice Payne Presson and husband Paul of Lubbock; son, Ken Cockrell and wife Jackie of Irving; grandchildren, Rachel Beggs and Matt Payne of Lubbock, Michelle Mayo and Bryan Cockrell of Irving, Ashley Breshers of Post, and Paige Cox of Shreveport; a special niece, Glea Adams of San Antonio; and five great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorial donations to be made in John's name to the Floydada Senior Citizens Center, 301 E. Georgia St, Floydada, TX 79235.
