The youngest son of James Jefferson Wagaman and Hester Emmaline Adams, John began his first job when he was still a teenager. He worked as a telegraph operator for the railroad until 1919. He also sold insurance during this time.


John helped establish Barton County State Bank in Lamar, Missouri in 1919. He served as president of the bank.


John's first wife was Hazel Hughes. They lived in Lamar and were the parents of 1 child.


John was a member of the Lamar Christian Church, the Masonic Lodge of Lamar and the Shrine Club of Springfield, Missouri. He served as a patron of the Mount Hope chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Lamar.

John married Aileen Grace Von Gunten on 10 May 1928 in Lamar. She was born on 09 Jan 1904 and was the daughter of Albert Von Gunten and Elizabeth Leonard.

Visitation was held at Chile's Funeral Home until the time of the funeral. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on 14 Jul 1964 at the Christian Church in Lamar, Missouri.
