Robert Manners was born at Bishop Auckland, Durham County, England, in 1817, and educated as an engineer. He married Elizabeth Wood. In 1855 he emigrated to America, and in 1856 came to Nininger where he ran the engine in a sawmill and afterwards in Vermillion, Mn. He bought 40 acres in the town of Vermillion, and opened up a farm in 1862 which was increased to 500 hundred acres, well stocked and provided with buildings, machinery, etc. He was married on January 21,1849 to Miss Annie Burns, who with five children survived him.
Mr. Manners was one of the oldest settlers in the county.
