Elizabeth Lucinda (Bessie Lou) Sheen Callender, 94, died on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 in Jackson, MS. Visitation is at Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church on Thursday, January 31, 2013 from 9:00 to 11:00 followed by a memorial service in the sanctuary at 11:00. A private burial will take place at Lakewood Memorial Park. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home will handle arrangements.

Survivors include daughters Cindy Fox and Tish Hughes and her husband Haden, all of Jackson; grandchildren Elizabeth Fox of Birmingham, AL, Carl Fox IV and his wife Shea of Memphis, TN, Lea Adams and her husband Ben of Los Angeles, CA, and Callender Hughes and his wife Rachel of Jackson; and great-grandchildren Lucy, Claude, and Sophie Fox, Elsie Adams, and Jackson Hughes.

Mrs. Callender was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Claude G. Callender, and her parents, Elizabeth G. Sheen and G. Lafayette Sheen.

She was born August 28, 1918, in Long Beach, MS. She grew up in New Orleans, LA but spent summers in Pass Christian, MS and considered it her home. She met Dr. Callender when she was a Red Cross nurse at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and he was a resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology. They were married in Pass Christian in 1945 and moved to Jackson in 1947, where he established his medical practice.

Mrs. Callender was a member of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church for over 60 years. "Namama," as she was affectionately called by her family, was a long-time member of the High Noon Luncheon Club and Explorer's Bible Study. She enjoyed summers in Pass Christian and spending time with family and friends.

Mrs. Callender was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was a great source of support to her husband during his medical practice and to their two daughters.

The family would like to express deep and sincere gratitude for the loving care and attention she received from her long-time personal caregivers, Diane Arnold, Kathy Carson, Clara Johnson, and Mary Alice McLaurin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church, PO Box 1092, Jackson MS 39215, Pear Orchard Presbyterian Church, 750 Pear Orchard Road, Ridgeland, MS 39157, or to the charity of your choice.
