NEWINGTON -- Walter Norton Smith, 70, died March 4 at Screven County Hospital in Sylvania.

He was born in Screven County. He was a retired tire service owner and a farmer. He owned Smith Brothers Tire Service in Sylvania, SOS Radial Tire Service in Savannah and Smith Bandag in Pinellas County, Fla. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Newington Baptist Church where he was a member of the Young Adult Sunday School Class. He was a Mason and a Shriner. He served 17 years on the Screven County Board of Education and on the State Board of Education for four years.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Dorothy Holmberg Smith of Newington; daughters, Chris Eve Smith of Savannah, Constance Smith Snead of Neptune Beach, Fla., Cathy Smith Brazeal of Marietta and Crystal Smith Moore of Dunedin, Fla.; sons, Cone Edward Smith II of Grand Prairie, Texas and Walter N. Smith, Jr. of Bethlehem; stepson, Ken Ritchie of Statesboro; sisters, Eve S. Underwood of Augusta, Christine S. Cieslowski and Martha S. Bevill, both of Newington, and Myrtie S. Dockery of Douglas; 13 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. today at the Smith residence.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Monday at Newington Baptist Church, burial in Walter N. Smith Family Cemetery, Longwood Plantation in Newington with Masonic Rites.
