Dennis Burns Penn
Pediatrician
Dennis Burns Penn, 86. husband of Brenda Watson Penn, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013.
Born in Georgetown, he was the son of the late John Buford and Penelope Burns Penn. Dr. Penn practiced pediatrics in Lexington for 35 years and had served as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Central Baptist, St. Joseph, Good Samaritan, and Shriner's Children's hospitals in Lexington. He served two years as assistant to Fayette County Coroner and then served as Fayette County Coroner from 1990-2002. During his service, he was instrumental in starting a program to prevent teen suicide named Stop Youth Suicide. In addition, he worked as an adjudicator for childhood disability claims for the Social Security Administration for over 25 years. He was a navy veteran of WWII, serving in the South Pacific. He was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he participated as a Stephen Minister, helping those in need.
In addition to his wife of 47 years, he is survived by his children, Dennis Gaines (Donna) Penn, Bowling Green, Julie Penn King, Holly Penn (Lee) Tevis, all of Georgetown, and Ellen Daube, of Lexington as well as his grandchildren, Allen, Christopher, and Brendan King, Kabren, Eden and Callie Stempa, Cage Tevis, Emily and Elizabeth Penn, and Alex and Ellerie Daube. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, brothers John Buford and Edgar Duke Penn, and sister, Louellen Penn Bowling.
Committal services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Georgetown Cemetery. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Second Presbyterian Church in Lexington with an open reception to follow the service. Memorials may be made in Dr. Penn's name to the Ronald McDonald House, P.O. Box 22414, Lexington, KY 40522 or to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Dr, Lexington, KY 40504.
