Sarah McCommon enjoyed life to the fullest. She was an enthusiastic and energetic leader in all of her endeavors. Sarah, age 78, passed away on January 28, 2013.
She was born in Tupelo, Miss., in 1934, the daughter of Oscar and Annie Estes Alexander. In the early 1940s the family moved to Memphis, Tenn., where Sarah met and married Marty McCommon. For many years the young couple moved
frequently, living in Dallas, Ft. Worth and Houston, Texas, as well as Macon Ga., and Atlanta on two separate occasions. She and Marty settled in their east Cobb home in 1987.
In her earlier career, she worked in insurance for independent insurance agencies, the General Adjustment Bureau and GEICO insurance company. After moving to Atlanta, she became a specialist in the children's department at Rich's (now Macy's) at Perimeter Mall, where she enjoyed the merchandizing and sales challenges of retail.
Sarah became a Christian at a young age and remained faithful in her Christian commitment throughout her life. Her son Mark McCommon recalled his mother's involvement in church work saying that she enjoyed studying the Bible and was a regular Sunday School teacher at churches in Texas and Georgia. A lifelong Baptist, she served as a messenger to the state and national Southern Baptist Conventions for many years. At her passing, she was a member of First Baptist Church, Roswell.
One of Sarah's great passions was seeing the world. Her daughter Margaret Dempsey-Colson said that her parents walked the Great Wall of China, rode atop camels in Egypt, enjoyed a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti while on
safari in Africa, climbed the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, visited churches and palaces along the Volga River in Russia, and stayed in historic inns in our own country. Their most recent venture took them to the North Pole this past June. While traveling, she also indulged another passioncollecting figurines. While living life to its fullest, she put together an extensive collection of
Lladro, Royal Doulton, Beleek and Depression glass collectibles.
Known as "Grammy" to her four grandchildren, Sarah unselfishly loved doing things for her family and others. She could always be counted on to produce that special gift one of her loved ones would want or the little extra that enabled them to participate in a special event.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 57 years, Marty McCommon; one son, Mark McCommon and his wife Pilar; one daughter Margaret Dempsey-Colson and her husband Keith Colson; and four grandchildren: Anna Dempsey McIldoon and her husband Dan, Will Dempsey, Michelle McCommon and Andrew McCommon; plus many nieces and nephews.
