Jesse Franklin Compton, age 79, of Columbus, MS, passed away January 2, 2011, at Vineyard Court Nursing Center.

Funeral services were Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Whaley officiating. The interment was immediately followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday, January 4, 2011, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home.

Mr. Compton was born June 22, 1931, in Leflore County, MS, to the late George Alex and Lizzie Henderson Compton. He retired from the Mississippi State Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator after 37 1/2 years.

Mr. Compton was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of the Tabernacle United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Breazeale Compton.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Lamar and Linda Compton of Kosciusko, MS, daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Fred Shepherd of Columbus, MS, sister, Eva Ainsworth of McGee, MS, grandchildren, Neil Shepherd, Steve Shepherd, Karen Pintican, Jason Compton, and Matthew Compton, 5 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Neil Shepherd, Steve Shepherd, Jason Compton, Matthew Compton, Many Pintican, and Bobby Ray.

Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Ables, Grady Jaynes, Kenneth Nichols, Lee Ray, James Bolton, Gene Hopper, and the employees of Vineyard Court Nursing Center
