Timothy Barton was born in Leicester on April 13, 1732. He was the son of Joshua and Anne Barton. It is not certain where he grew up, as his father was a land owner in several Massachusetts towns. Timothy married Hepzibah Stowe in Southborough on October 11, 1753. They were the parents of seven children, born in Spencer, Hopkinton and Charlton between 1754 and 1766. Hepzibah died, probably from complications of childbirth, on October 26, 1766, at Charlton. Timothy then married Amy Allen of Dudley, at that town on January 20, 1767. They had two children. Timothy responded to the Bennington alarm in 1777 during the Revolution. He was a private in Capt. David Chadwick's Company for five days. Amy died sometime around 1783. Timothy was "of Amherst" when he married Persis Livermore on August 23, 1784 in Chesterfield. Timothy was a cooper and was listed as the head of a family on the 1790 Census in Chesterfield. Timothy lived in Spencer, Hopkinton, Charlton, Oxford, Chesterfield and Amherst during his life. Timothy died in Amherst on December 25, 1791. His will bequeathed to wife Pearcis, and sons Jonathan, Timothy, Benjamin, Alpheus, Joshua and daughters Molly, Sally and Hepsibah. His land in Chesterfield was sold at auction to Ezekiel Pierce in February 1797 for $111.00. The only cemetery in Amherst until 1817 was the Burying Place, or West Cemetery. There is no record today of Timothy's burial there, but there is no reason to believe he was buried anywhere else. All towns named in this biography are in Massachusetts.
