Colonel Ephraim Stearns was born on January 10, 1740, the son of Ebenezer and Mary (Spring) Stearns of Worcester. He married Prudence Wilder on August 12, 1764. He was shoemaker by trade and settled in Petersham, Massachusetts, of which he was Treasurer for twenty years, as well as selectman and assessor. He commanded a company of militia during the Revolutionary War. He was also instrumental in subduing the famous Shays Rebellion in central and western Massachusetts. "On the evening of February 3, 1787, General Benjamin Lincoln's command, of Worcester, marched against the insurgents under Captain Daniel Shays, with Col. Ephraim Stearns' regiment in advance...To the hardiest soldier that terrible night's march was something to be remembered for life...The insurgents were taken by surprise (in Petersham) and fled in hot haste, scattering in every direction."
From Genealogy and Memoirs of Isaac Stearns and His Descendents, pp. 123-124
