Elma Schafer Hendershott of Moscow died Saturday, June 9, 2007, at her home. She was 92.

Elma was born July 30, 1914, at Ree, N.D., to Jacob and Anna Ost Christman. She grew up and attended school there, and as a teenager, moved to Columbia Falls, Mont. She worked doing laundry prior to her marriage to Fredrick L. Schafer in 1934 at Columbia Falls. They made their home there until moving to Portland in 1942 to work as welders in the shipyards during WWII. In 1945 they moved to Moscow where she was a homemaker and Mr. Schafer worked for the University of Idaho. Elma worked for First Security Bank for more than 20 years. Mr. Schafer died on June 1, 1970.

She and Clarence O. Hendershott were married in Moscow on May 1, 1978. They made their home in Moscow where they were active members of Paradise Hills Church Of God and she enjoyed sewing, embroidery, latch-hook rugs and especially quilting.

Mr. Hendershott died in September of last year. Surviving are her son, Lewis P. and his wife, Gladys Schafer, of Nampa, Idaho, and a daughter, JoAnn E. Schafer, of Tacoma, Wash.; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Her stepchildren include Raymond and his wife, Marlinda Hendershott, of Onaway, Ruth and her husband, Tom Hink, of East Wenatchee, Wash., Leeann and her husband, Roger Patterson, of Marysville, Wash., and Kitty and her husband, Larry Balkum, of Arlington, Texas. She also leaves seven stepgrandchildren and nine stepgreat-grandchildren and a brother, Helmeth Christman, of Columbia Falls, Mont.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Whorl, and a son, Ernest Schafer, as well as nine brothers and sisters and four stepchildren.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 16 at 1 p.m. at the Paradise Hills Church of God. Jay McCoy will officiate and burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery.

Viewing will be at Short's Funeral Chapel on Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days.

The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of the Palouse or to Paradise Hills Church of God.
