Gloria Wynne Lankford, of Houston, passed away peacefully in Fort Worth on Wednesday, the 23rd of January 2013, at the age of 91.
Gloria was born in Palestine, Texas, on the 20th of July 1921, the only child of John Henry Wynne and Nina Pennybacker Wynne. She attended San Jacinto High School, Texas Woman's University, and graduated from the University of Houston. She resided in Houston for 81 years and moved to Fort Worth in 2003 to start a new adventure at Broadway Plaza. Later, she moved to Stonegate Nursing Center, also in Fort Worth. She was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church of Houston for 57 years. Gloria and Walter enjoyed many happy years as members of the Briar Club in Houston.
In service to her Lord, Jesus Christ, Gloria devoted her life to her husband, two daughters, and four grandchildren. She imparted great courage, wisdom, and joy to all she met, especially her many friends. As she overcame the death of her husband and multiple illnesses, she glorified her Lord who brought His light into the darkness of her final years.
The daughters would like to thank you, dear family and friends, for your prayers and support. Also, they would like to express their deepest gratitude to their mother's caregiver, Karen Corey, for her tireless devotion and loving kindness to our mother. We are a family knitted closely at the heart, blessed beyond belief, and so grateful to God for the wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother that He has so generously shared with us.
In addition to her parents, Gloria is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Walter Addison Lankford, a native of Morattico, Virginia; and her son-in-law, Scott T. Walker of Fort Worth, Texas. Survivors include her two daughters, Lynda Lankford Smythe and husband Charles M. Smythe, Jr. of Kemah, Texas, and Janina Lankford Walker of Fort Worth; four grandchildren, Lacy Smythe Edmondson and her husband Robbie, of Houston, Charles M. Smythe III of Wisconsin, Wynne Templeton Walker and his wife Jenni Pope Walker, of Houston, Janina Walker Holland and her husband J.R. Holland of Fort Worth; and five great-grandchildren, Eliot Grace Walker, Cora Campbell Walker, Graham Wishart Royal Walker, Riley Chase Edmondson, all of Houston, and Arthur Scott Holland, "Ash," of Fort Worth.
A memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Friday, the 1st of February, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, where the Rev. Martin J. Bastian, Senior Associate Rector for Pastoral Care, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception is to follow in the adjacent Bagby Parish Hall.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.
