Mystery Shrouds Layton Death - Suicide or Murder?

Investigating officers are continuing their search for the cause of the death of Coy Layton, who died Thursday night at a local hospital. State, County and City officers are working on the case.

There were no eye witnesses who could establish whether Layton's wounds, cuts on the throat, were self-inflicted or done by someone else. The knife used in the cutting has been found.

Layton was pronounced dead on arrival at the Donalsonville Hospital. He was brought there by his stepson. Police officers were summoned at about 7:00 p.m. They launched their investigation into the case and no cause has yet been established.

Funeral services were held in Pansey, Alabama for Coy Layton who died February 13. The Rev. Akin Etheridge officiated at rites held February 16 and interment was in Liberty Cemetery in Pansey.

Layton is survived by his wife, Dottie Layton; two daughters, Rosa Bell and Annie Layton; two sons, A.J. and Truman Layton; three sisters, Mrs. John A. Dupree, Mrs. Annie Watson and Miss Viola Layton; and one brother, Mr. Fuller Layton.

Layton had lived here for the past ten years and was 61 at the time of his death. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.

Pallbearers were Shelby Fortson, Keland Oliff, Truman Drinkwater, Carl Dyson, Kermit Jackson and Reamer McDaniel.
