The son of Nicholas George & Nancy Jane (Biggs) Crist, he married Rebecca Shull and fathered Celia A. (b. @1846 - married Henry C. Penny), Mary E. (b 11/30/47, d. 10/27/62), John (b. @1851), Henry (b. @1857), James K. (b. 06/08/59), Ida Viola (b. 05/16/62), Charles B. (b. 05/28/65), and Carrie (b. @1869). In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Newport, Perry County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted - understating his age by three years - and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as 1st lieutenant of Co. D, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 24, 1861. He also enlisted in Harrisburg September 12, 1862, as 1st lieutenant of Co. I, 6th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company September 27, 1862.

NOTE: The U.S. Army never bestowed the rank of captain on John Harry Crist. Either it was a post-war honorary title then commonly bestowed on prominent veterans, or he earned it serving with the Pennsylvania State Militia.

Crist – On the 23rd inst., Capt. J.K. Crist, formerly of Newport, aged 71 years. Deceased was the father of Mrs. Henry C. Penney, of Fermanagh township, this county.
