Lumand Wilcox was born in Lorraine Township, Jefferson County New York to Rev.Luman Wilcox and Elizabeth C Bliss Wilcox. He lived in New York until the spring of 1861 when he moved to LaSalle County, Illinois to live with his brother. In August ,1862 he volunteered to join the 7th Illinois Cavalry Company C. In 1868 he purchased 160 acres of land Section 1 of Lyman Township which was southwest of later platted village of Thawville.
