She was born in February 1870 as Janke de Haas (the Hare) in the northeastern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, daughter of Hendrik de Haas (1837 NL - 1885 NL) and Antje van der Woude (1836 NL - 1930 MI, USA).

On 28 November 1891 servant maid Janke de Haas married at Grijpskerk, province Groningen at the age of 21 years to the seven years older ship tower (scheepsjager) Hotze Scheeringa.

Janke and Hotze moved in August 1895 from Zuidhorn, Groningen, NL to the country village of Pieterzijl in the municipality of Grijpskerk, western Groningen and adopted Janke's niece, Jantje (aka. Janna/Jennie) de Haas, daughter of Hein de Haas and Ybeltje Lubberts who had both died at a young age.

On 30 May 1905 farmer Hotze (42 y), his wife Janke (35 y) and their adopted daughter Jantje (4 y) arrived on the SS Statendam in New York, Ellis Island. Their last residence place in the Netherlands was Pieterzijl and their destination is Hospers, Sioux County, in the northwestern part of Iowa, where Hotze's brother J[acob] Scheeringa is living with his family.
Soon Jennie and Hotze left Iowa and settled in the Dutch settlement Little Holland, later on called Amsterdam-Churchill, Gallatin County, in the southwestern part of Montana. Hotze died there about 1906

On 15 March 1909 Jennie De Haas, aged 39 years, remarried at her residence place Manhattan, Gallatin County, in the southwestern part of Montana, to James Veltkamp, 51 y, widower since 1906, also born in Friesland and residing at Manhattan too.

In the beginning of 1920 Jennie (49 y) lived with her husband James Veltkamp (62 y), her daughter Jennie (21 y, born in the Netherlands), her mother Antje DeHaas (83 y) and James his granddaughter Grace Postema (12 y) at Manhattan, Gallatin County, Montana. Her husband James Veltkamp died there on 26 January 1920 at the age of 62 years.

After her husband James Veltkamp's death Jennie de Haas remarried for the second time, on 2 Feb 1921 at Manhattan, Galletin County, Montana to the ten years younger Dutchman Geert Smit, their hired hand on the Veltkamp farm and who
immigrated to the US in 1913.

In March of 1921 Geert, Jennie, and probably her mother Antje, left Manhattan, Montana and moved to Sheldon, Iowa. By 1925, Jennie, Geert, and her mother Antje de Haas were living at 327 College Ave., in the Dutch settlement Holland, Ottawa County, Michigan where Geert worked as a finisher for the Holland Furniture Co. Jennie's sister Sijke (Sadie) and her husband Johannes (Joe) Veldheer were living in Holland at the time. Antje died at their home in Holland on 8 Jan 1930 at the age of 95. After Antje passed away, Jennie and Geert moved back to the Netherlands. After several months in the Netherlands, they decided to return to the United States. They left Rotterdam on 2 January 1931 aboard the SS Rotterdam. After arriving in New York City, they moved back to west Michigan. On 26 May 1931 Geert and Jennie bought a 41 1/2 acre farm near Wayland, in Allegan Co. (Southwest corner of Section 30 of Leighton Twp.), located about 20 miles south of Grand Rapids. The farm was divided into two parcels by the Pennsylvania Central Railroad right-of-way. The west parcel was 25 acres and the east parcel was 16 1/2 acres.
On 14 Feb 1942 they sold their farm and on that same date, Geert and Jennie moved into the nearby village of Moline where they purchased a 4 1/2 acre parcel (SW corner of Section 7 of Leighton Twp). On 4 April 1944 they sold 4 acres for $500 and on 9 March 1945 the remainder of the parcel was sold. They then moved to Grand Rapids, MI, living at 1654 Delwood SW.

Jennie died 11 Apr 1949 at their home in Grand Rapids at the age of 79. By 1953, Geert had moved to the Holland Home, a retirement home at 1450 East Fulton St. in Grand Rapids, where he died on 16 Feb 1973 at the age of 92.
Both are buried at Grandville Cemetery, Grandville, Kent Co., MI.

During the time Jennie de Haas and her family, including the Veltkamp family, lived in Montana, they were members "in good standing" of the Manhattan Christian Reformed Church, according to church records.
