Son of Paul Chiles, Jr. and Sarah C. Collins Chiles, he married Ann Eliza Young on October 29, 1865 in Giles County, Tennessee. They were the parents of twelve known children: William Paul, Henry C., John Thomas, Charles C., Sarah Elizabeth, Fannie Lou, Ida May, James Bruce, Robert Lee, Joseph Johnson, Joe O. & Cannon C. Chiles.

William B. Chiles served the CSA in the Civil War with the 3rd Tennessee (Clack's) Infantry, Company H. He enlisted as a Private and was discharged as Sergeant.
