Ethel Marie Barry, 78, of New London died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at her home.

Born Oct. 8, 1934, in Queen City, Mo., she was the daughter of Ralph and Leah Mae Ruth York Utt. On June 28, 1953, she married Melvin Francis Barry in Burlington. He died Dec. 24, 2004.

Mrs. Barry worked at City Carton in Mount Pleasant as an administrative assistant, retiring in December 2012. She graduated from Burlington High School, was of the Baptist faith and, as a young woman, sang with the Mark Baptist Church Choir on a weekly radio show on KBIZ in Ottumwa. She was a Cubs, Hawkeyes and Bears fan. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, baking and cooking and reading, especially Tom Clancy.

Survivors include two daughters, Amy Overton and Sara Francy, both of Mount Pleasant; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Barry will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Elliott Chapel, with the Rev. Harold Schutte officiating. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery, rural New London.

A memorial has been established for Iowa Hospice.
