Born in 1870 in the small town of Dobrish, about 25 miles from Prague, in what was then Austrian Bohemia to Ignatz Beck and Elizabeth Pollock. His parents died when he was very young and he came to the United States to live with his aunt in Holden Missouri.
Moved to Chicago at the age of 20 to work for his oldest brother Carl who had opened a succesful medical practice. Inspired by Carl, Joe decided to also become a doctor. He graduated with honors from the Chicago College of Physicians and Surgeons, which later became the medical department of the University of Illinois.
Among his many medical accomplishments, he opened a hospital with his brothers, invented a tool to remove tonsils which was universally used for many years, was one of the first surgeons to perform facial reconstruction (now known as plastic surgery) and was a founding member of many associations including the ABEA which he presided over in 1936.
Married to Carrie Stein from 1899-1927 which ended in divorce. Had three children with Carrie: Elsa, Philip and Joseph C. Jr.
Married to Trennis C. Trendell from 1927 until his death in 1942.

Dr. Beck was affiliated with Michael Reese, Henrotin, Mount Sinai, and Edward Hines hospitals. He was a graduate from the University of Illinois in 1895 and took his postgraduate work abroad.
He was the husband of Trennie C. (nee Trendell); father of Elsa C., Philip S., and Joseph C. Beck Jr.; grandfather of Elsa C. Beck II, and Irving V.; brother of Dr. Carl, Hermina Buchsbaum, and the late Dr. Emil G., Dr. Rudolph Beck and Rosa Winternitz. In state at People's Church, 941 Lawrence avenue. Interment Acacia Park.
