Herman C. Schomaker, 88, of New Baden, Ill., born May 15, 1922, in Belleville, Ill., died Saturday, June 19, 2010, at St. Joseph Hospital in Breese, Ill.

Mr. Schomaker formerly worked at New Baden Grain and Trenton CO-OP. He was a member of St. George Parish in New Baden, Ill., past president of the Holy Name Society, was an usher and also served for funeral masses at the church. He was a past officer and current member of St. George New Baden Knights of Columbus Council 10311, a member of the New Baden Senior Citizens and was a New Baden volunteer fireman for 30 years. He was currently an honorary member of the New Baden Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman J. and Mary, nee Overberg, Schomaker; one granddaughter, Catherine Hellmann; a daughter-in-law, Shelly Mae Schomaker; brothers and sisters, Joseph H. Schomaker, Eleanor Kamer, Louise Buehler, Alice Berkemann, John Schomaker in infancy, Vincent "Bud" Schomaker, and Alphonse Schomaker; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Schomaker, Martin Kamer, Warren Krausz, Arthur Buehler, Bernard Berkemann, Elizabeth Schomaker, Pauline Schomaker, Herman and Irene Frerker, Wilhelmine and Herman Pollmann, Annie and William Thoele, Mary and Elmer Husman, Laura and George Dulle and LaVerne "Bud" and Delores Frerker; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry and Josephine Frerker.

Surviving are his wife, Sophie V., nee Frerker, Schomaker of New Baden, Ill., whom he married on Oct. 20, 1953, in New Baden, Ill.; his children, Barbara (Thomas) Wolfslau, John (Nancy) Schomaker and Richard G. Schomaker, all of New Baden, Ill., and Monica (Michael) Hellmann of Trenton, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Jamie Wolfslau, Justin (Dana) Wolfslau, Christopher Schomaker, Sarah Schomaker, Brandon (Rebecca) Schomaker, Matthew (Nicole) Hellmann, Elizabeth (fiance, Benjamin Crawford) Hellmann; two great-grandchildren, Jaden Wolfslau and Brooke Schomaker; one brother, David (Kay) Schomaker of New Baden, Ill.; one sister, Marie Krausz of Mascoutah, Ill.; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Schomaker of Albers, Ill.; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 21, 2010, and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at Hempen Funeral Home in New Baden, Ill. The New Baden Senior Citizens will visit at 5 p.m., the Knights of Columbus will visit at 6:45 p.m. and the New Baden Volunteer Fire Department at 7 p.m., all Monday at the funeral home.

Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at St. George Catholic Church in New Baden, Ill., with the Rev. Gene Neff officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in New Baden, Ill.
