Death followed a series of operations in the past three weeks. Mrs. Gruwell became a patient at Ball Hospital on Feb. 15 and was taken to Riley Hospital on Feb. 25.
She led her dance band in this area for many years, playing at square dances and other social events. A resident most of her life of Muncie and Delaware County, she was born in Redkey, the daughter of James and Jennie Bookout.
Mrs. Gruwell was a member of the musicians union and Kappa Delta Phi sorority.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Gene (June) Kern of Oakville; two sons, Walter K. Gruwell of Granville, and Sgt. Jay Gayle Gruwell with the U.S. Army, home on emergency leave from Germany; two granddaughters, Deborah Kay and Julie Ann Kerns of Oakville; and three grandsons, Jimmie Keith, Max Allen and Timothy Myer Gruwell of Granville.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Meeks Mortuary. Rev. Gail Davis of South Madison Church will officiate. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory. Friends may call at the mortuary after 2 p.m. Tuesday and before services Wednesday.
