John B. Olson was born at Calmar, Iowa June 13, 1875 to Gilbert Olson and Inger (Johnson) Olson. His father signed a Patent Record to Homestead the SD 1/4 of Section 29 in Township 108 in Dakota Territory which is now Riverview Township in Moody County; under the name of, Gilbert O. Bjonerud. The President who signed the Patent was Chester A. Arthur, dated Nov. 17, 1884. Gilbert's family name was Bjonerud when they came to America from Norway, some of the brothers changed their name to Olson later years.

John was baptized in Iowa, came to S.D. with his parents in 1882, was confirmed at the age of 16, by Pastor J. A. Blilie, in Moody Co. He attended rural school, helped improve the homestead-they planted many trees. Later years he attended a Business School in Jayette, Iowa, continued to work on his parents farm until going to farming for himself. He met Malise Amundson in 1900.
