Mr. Joseph Marcus was born June 21, 1872, Coatjuten, Germany and died at Shullsburg, Wis., March 18, 1921, at the age of 48 years, 8 months and 27 days.
He came to America at the age of twelve, landing at Champagne, Ill., where he received a part of his schooling; from there he went to Chicago. he came to Shullsburg in 1897 and had a store here.
Mr. Marcus was married to Minnie Deppe Aug. 3, 1899. To them were born four children, Esther Vera, Homer D., Jeane Ruth and Joseph William. Besides Mrs. Marcus and the children he leaves four brothers: Philip E. of Rib Lake, Wis., Isaac of Medford, Wis., Mandel of Minneapolis, and Frank who is in Germany.
The funeral took place Sunday afternoon, March 20, from the house, Rev. Evert of the Congregational church and the local Masonic lodge officiating.
Mr. Marcus was well known and highly respected among business men. He was patient in his long and painful illness, and made a brave fight for life.
Mr. P.E. Marcus of Rib Lake was the only brother who could be reached by wire. The other two in this country, being traveling men, were away when telegrams were sent to their homes.
