Richard Lynn Marine started teaching in 1932 when he was 18 years old to 80 elementary students in a one-room schoolhouse--which was probably the Sumach, MO school. He received a Bachelor's degree from SEMO State, and a M.Ed. from the University of Missouri. He taught for 45 years in several different SEMO schools and in 1947 he coached the Bloomfield High School basketball team to a state championship. He later became Director of Elementary Ed for the Columbia MO public schools. He retired in 1980, and ran the Marine Angus Farm for 25 years. He married Thetis Douglass in 1934 and they had 3 children: William D. Marine, Richard W. Marine, and Kay (Spitz) Marine. His parents were W. H. Marine and Dossie (Waddell) Marine, and his grandparents were John "Bud" Waddell and "Aunt Vonie"(Mathis) Waddell of Sumach. His grandfather "Bud" Waddell was a brother to Wright Waddell and Uncle Babe Waddell of Sumach MO, Dunklin County.
