American painter. Studied under Henry Vianden in Milwaukee, Martin Schauss in Weimar, Karl Gussow in Berlin, and Otto Seitz and Gabriel and Max Lindenschmitt in Munich. Became a professor at the Royal Academy in Munich in 1893, and in 1895 a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts. Married Elsie Fellerer Messerschmitt (1872–1919), widow of the painter Pius Ferdinand Messerschmitt (1858–1915), in 1916. Appointed a privy councilor to the Bavarian government in 1917. Became director of the Royal Academy in Munich in 1919.
