EDWIN SWETLAND DIES

PORTLAND CONFECTIONER PASSES AWAY, AGED 70

Founder of Swetland & Son, Native of Springfield, Mass. – Funeral Will Be Wednesday

Edwin Payson Swetland, aged 70 years, founder of the business of Swetland & Son, died at 3:45 P.M. yesterday at his residence, 248 East Sixtieth street, after a long illness.

Mr. Swetland was born in Springfield, Mass., April 9, 1842. It was there he learned the confectionery business which he followed for several years before coming to Portland in 1885. Shortly after locating in this city, he established the Morrison street house which bears his name. At Springfield, November 24, 1862, he married Laura Quimby, who, with one son, Lot Q. Swetland, survives him. A brother, Louis E. Swetland, died January 17.

Funeral services will be conducted at Finley’s chapel at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon by Rev. William G. Moore, pastor of Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery.
