She was the daughter of Jean-Gabriel Cerre and Catherine Girard who moved from Kaskaskia, IL to St. Louis in 1779. Cerre was a wealthy merchant and was the primary supplier for the expeditions of George Rogers Clark. They were all members of the Old Cathedral that still stands on the river front today.

Therese married Rene Auguste Chouteau, Jr. in 1786 in St. Louis. He was called "Auguste" and was the co-founder of St. Louis. Their marriage formed an important alliance between two of St. Louis' most powerful families.

They built a large 2-story house with upper balconies where the south leg of the Arch now stands.
