Sophus Lauritz Jensen was born on November 18th, 1922 in Clay County in rural Beresford, SD to Carl and Dorthea (Peterson) Jensen and entered into death on January 18th, 2013 at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD at the age of 90 years, 2 months.

Sophus attended Rockfield Grade School until the 8th Grade. He then served in the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC's) in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Sophus married Marjorie Madsen on February 24th, 1946 in Wakonda, SD. Sophus and Marge were blessed with two sons, Roger Sophus in 1947 and Terry in 1949. The couple farmed near Beresford, until they retired and moved to town in the fall of 1989. They traveled south in the winter, eventually making their winter home in Mesa, AZ, where they enjoyed making new friends and entertaining.

Sophus was a prior member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, and a current member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford, SD. He was an avid bowler, gardener, and enjoyed playing cards with friends and family. His family was his greatest pride and joy, especially his three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 67 years, Marge; his son, Terry and daughter in-law Judy Jensen of Beresford; grandchildren Nathan and Kristin Jensen of Beresford, Rebecca and Jason Pauly of Norwood, MN, and Candace and Greg Zweifel of Beresford; his five great- grandchildren, Dane Sophus and Judd Thomas Pauly, Grant Terry and Addison Dru Jensen, and Garrison Gregory Zweifel. Others who shared in his life include his sisters-in-law, Lois Jensen of Cambridge, MN and Delores Carlson of Sioux Falls, SD as well as many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He is preceded into death by his parents, son Roger (1966), brothers Ivan and Einer, and sisters Arlene Frick and Mavis Christensen.

Funeral services will be 10AM Monday, January 21, 2013 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford. Burial will follow at Beresford City Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8PM Sunday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with the family present from 6-8PM and a prayer service at 7PM.
