Dr. Peale, who was a resident of Norristown for the last seven years and a former resident of North Hills, had been a professor of pathology at Temple until his retirement in 1982. He was then awarded professor emeritus status.
He was a graduate of St. Joseph's Preparatory School and St. Joseph's College. He completed medical studies at Temple University in 1933 and served his residency at Temple University Hospital.
He received many awards during his career, including a 1983 honor from the Pennsylvania Medical Society in recognition of his 50 years in medicine. He was a member of numerous professional medical groups, including the American Board of Pathology and the Pennsylvania Medical Society. He was a longtime member of the College of American Pathologists and named emeritus fellow in 1980.
He also was a member of St. Titus Roman Catholic Church in East Norriston.
Survivors: his wife, Agnes Eckerle Peale; sons, William J. Sr. and Kevin W.; daughters, Marie Wolff and Constance Cunniff; seven grandchildren; a brother, and a sister.
