Berniece Dykes Hawkins was born August 31, 1920 to Jay Ernie and Birdie Hazel Dykes in Pryor, Oklahoma. She departed this life Thursday, January 17, 2013 in Tulsa at the age of 92 years, 4 months, and 17 days.

She had spent her youth in Bristow graduating in 1937. She then attended Central State Teachers college where she received her Bachelor's degree. She then married Alvie Hawkins and enjoyed sharing their passion for educating children in Bristow, Sapulpa, and retiring in Oceanside, California. She was best known for starting the remedial reading program in Bristow. After retiring they moved back to Bristow to be close to family. She enjoyed going out to eat, watching "Let's make a Deal" and spending time with her family and friends. She will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her several cousins as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers Emmett, and Jack Dykes, and one sister Mildred Dobson.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00AM Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the Hutchins-Maples Funeral Chapel with Reverend Gene Jackson officiating. Interment will be at the Bristow City Cemetery.
