SAWYER, DAVID GARLAND, 50, died Wed. Jan. 17, 2007 at the University of Kentucky Hospital. A native of Morristown, TN, he was the son of the late Claude and Peggy Cook Sawyer. He attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Plant and Soil Science and his Masters of Science in Agricultural Economics. He began his career with the Soil Conversation Service in 1978 as a soil scientist in Campbell County, Tennessee and held several positions within the state. He transferred from Tennessee to the SCS National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. in 1983 and held several positions. Mr. Sawyer transferred from Washington, D.C. to Pennsylvania in 1995 serving 18 months as Deputy State Conservationist. In March 1997 he was named as State Conservationist in Kentucky and has served in his current position for 6 years. Mr. Sawyer joined SWCS as a SCS student trainee in 1977 and has been a member of the East Tennessee, Washington, D.C., Keystone and Bluegrass Chapters. Survivors include his two sons, Joseph Sawyer and John Sawyer, both of Lexington; two brothers, Stephen Sawyer, Ph. D, Richmond, VA, and Mark Sawyer, Morristown, TN; a nephew, Matthew Sawyer; and a niece, Mallory Sawyer. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Sat. at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd., Lexington, KY by Rev. Cameron McDonald. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Pyle, Tom Marcum, Mark Waggoner, Jack Kuhn, Bill Craddock, and Billy Hartsell. Visitation will be 4-8 pm Friday.
