According to his brother James' 1912 "Autobiography", Zenas died of yellow fever while serving as mate on the brig "Julia A. Hallock" while on a voyage from Cuba to the US.
Although Zenas' brother's "Autobiography" says Zenas was buried in Smithfield, NC (which is inland), his cemetery marker says Smithville, Cape Fear. I believe this is more likely as the Old Smithville Burying Ground is there in the town of Southport, once called Smithville, on the coast.
