Viola Adams Reed, 78, died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 12, 2013, at her home in Snowflake. She was born Oct. 4, 1934, in Show Low to the late William Henry and Nancy (Whipple) Lewis.
At the age of 17, Viola married Fred W. Adams, for time and all eternity, in the Mesa Arizona Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. To their union four children were born and Viola had the blessed privilege to stay at home and care for them without having to work outside of her home. She was a wonderful mother and taught her children, by example, how to live good and noble lives.
In 1974, Viola and Fred made the move from Show Low to Snowflake and, just a few years later, they became the owners of Pioneer Market. She quickly became a familiar and trusted face to everyone in the communities of Snowflake and Taylor. She truly appreciated the opportunity to get to know many people and valued their friendship as well. In 1989, after 13 years of ownership, the Adams' sold their store, Viola became a teacher's aide at Highland Primary and Taylor Elementary Schools. She worked there for some 20-plus years and possessed a special gift and truly was loved by all of her students. Viola understood the importance of helping children learn. The last few years she volunteered her time and talents to those children. Naturally, Viola was a compassionate and loving person. If she ever saw another in need, she would open her heart to them in both word and deed. Daily, she tried to live the Lord's admonition to "love one another." Countless are the numbers of those who benefited from her kindness. She had the opportunity to care for others who were suffering through various cancer ailments in the comfort of their own homes.
Over the years, Viola brought in numerous meals to those in need. On Dec. 1, 2003, Viola's husband, Fred, died after nearly 52 years of marriage. They shared a beautiful life together and, through her testimony of the Risen Savior, she knew they would be together again. On January 21, 2006, Viola married Ronald Reed, for time, in the Snowflake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Prior to and during their marriage, Ron served as Patriarch of the Snowflake Arizona Stake. Viola loved being hostess to those who were receiving their Patriarchal Blessings from him, in their home. The spirit of love that enveloped her home during those sacred moments was so very strong. She always appreciated the opportunity to make others feel welcome in her home.
Viola was never one to be idle. She kept herself busy doing a number of things that would ultimately end up blessing the lives of others. She kept an immaculate house and always considered it to be a safe haven for her family and friends. Viola loved to work in her flower beds. Her yard was always quite the showplace. Viola also possessed many other talents. She enjoyed quilting and has made many quilts for family and friends. She also enjoyed ceramics, embroidering, and crocheting, making beautiful keepsakes for many. She was a skilled artist and thoroughly enjoyed oil painting.
Viola enjoyed writing her life history in journals. Through the years she has filled more than 21 journals, heeding the counsel of the prophets. She was a faithful member of the LDS Church and has served in many callings over the years. She served as a Primary President, Compassionate Service Leader in the Relief Society, a Primary Teacher, a Sunday School Teacher, and as a member of the Snowflake Stake Primary Board. In most recent years, Viola was a dedicated temple worker in the Snowflake Temple.
Viola is survived by her husband, Ron Reed of Snowflake; three children: William Allan (Merle) Adams, Debra (Ted) Brewer, David Lynn (Stephanie) Adams; sister Hilda (Larry) Frost of Tempe; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law: Beryl Adams, Mary Carroll and Carmen Adams.
Along with her parents and husband, Fred, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Ray Adams; granddaughter Heather Marie Adams; brother Willard Lewis; five sisters: Ella McCleve, Marbry Vance, Rilla Caldwell, Doris Rogers and Mildred Turley.
The public visitation will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Owens Livingston Mortuary - Heritage Chapel, 84 E. 19th South in Snowflake. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Main Street Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 48 N. Main St. in Snowflake, where additional visitation will be one hour prior. The concluding service and interment will immediately follow at the R.V. "Mike" Ramsay Memorial Cemetery in Snowflake.
