Mary was the daughter of John Taylor & Nellie (Burkett) Taylor.

As a young girl, she walked from Nauvoo, IL to the Salt Lake Valley, UT. During the trek, while caring for her twin siblings, she was confronted by Indians who wanted to steal the twins. She grabbed a butcher knife and frightened them away.

(1) She and her sister had many opportunities to marry into a polygamous family. They refused them all. After each proposal, they climbed upon the log house and cut a notch in a ridge pole!
(1) She met her husband, Samuel Moore Hiatt, while he teaching in Slaterville, UT. They were married on 19 Jan 1860. They are the parents of 14 children: Samuel R., Frank, Jeanette, John, Eleanor 'Nellie', Sarah, Mary Jane, Charles, Emeline, Elijah 'Lige', George, Louise, Alfred 'Al', & Burt.

She lived in Hermiston, OR, and LaGrande, OR 1900-1925 before moving to Milton (now Milton-Freewater)
