Bessie E. (Ontis) Ellington died at 8:55 a.m. Monday May 29, 2000 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton.
She was born Feb. 14, 1911 in Grafton and was the daughter of the late Charles and Ollie (Ridenour) Ontis.
She married Carl L. "Duke" Ellington in 1939 in Wood River. He preceded her in death Dec. 23, 1975.
She is survived by and will be greatly missed by three sons and four daughter-in-law, David and Sharon Ellington of Nashville Tn., Jerry and Char Ellington of Godfrey, Thomas and Kay Ellington of Alton; and Agnes Felts of Godfrey; five grandchildren, Marc Ellington of Memphis Tn., Robert Ellington of Los Angeles, Jay Ellington of Edwardsville, Chris Yount of Granite City, Sarah Buchana of Collinsville; five great-grandchildren, Nicholas Albert Yount, Alex Yount, Benjamin Ellington, Andrew Ellington, Elsie Ellington, other extended family and many friends. She was aslo preceded in death by a son, Donald Charles. Felts, a infant grandson, Donald C. Felts, a brother, Thomas Ontis and two sisters; Uneta (Ontis) Volkner and Bernice (Ontis) Vaughn.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today Tuesday May 30, 2000, at Fine and Quinn Chapel for Funerals, Sixth and Henery streets in Alton, where services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday May 31, 2000 with
pastor Bill Waddell officiating. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.
Memorials may be made to Salem Presbyterian Church, where she was a long time member.

Miss Bessie Ontis, daughter of Charles Ontis and Lawrence Morrison, son of Mrs. Morrison, were quietly married in Jerseyville Thursday by Justice Fred J. Bertman. The young couple were accompanied to Jerseyville by Mrs. Morrison and Mr. Ontis, their consent being necessary as the bride and groom were not of legal age. Mr. Morrison is a graduate of the Fieldon High School.
